Chapter One
The Rejection That Changed Everything
At 18 years old, Michael applied to some of the most prestigious universities in America — Harvard, Yale, Princeton.
He was rejected. Every one of them.
For many people, that would have been the end of the story.
For Michael, it became the beginning.
When he applied to the University of Michigan, he included something unusual: a recording of himself singing. Shortly afterward, he was accepted and encouraged to pursue music.
It was there that he met legendary Metropolitan Opera tenor George Shirley, who recognized something extraordinary and delivered a message Michael has carried ever since:
Talent is not ownership.
Talent is responsibility.
Chapter Two
From student to international star
By age 22, Michael became one of the youngest winners of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
Over the next two decades, he would perform on many of the world’s most prestigious stages, earning recognition as one of the leading tenors of his generation.
Yet while audiences saw an artist, Michael was building something else behind the scenes.
He remained deeply interested in business, leadership, education, and public service.
The stage taught him performance.
Life taught him leadership.
Chapter Three
Entrepreneurship, failure, and lessons in judgment
Like many entrepreneurs, Michael experienced both success and failure.
He launched a technology company designed to help artists find work opportunities and better monetize their careers.
The vision was strong.
The execution was challenging.
The company ultimately failed.
But the experience became one of the most valuable lessons of his life.
It reinforced a belief that would later become central to his speaking and writing:
Failure is not the opposite of success.
Failure is information.
The decisions we make after failure determine the direction of our future.
Chapter Four
Building opportunity for others
Following that experience, Michael asked a simple question:
How could the same mission be used to help others?
The answer became ArtSmart.
Founded to connect professional artists with students in underserved communities, ArtSmart has grown into a transformative educational initiative serving communities across America.
Through mentorship, music, goal-setting, and personal development, the program has helped thousands of students discover new possibilities for their futures.
The mission reflects a belief Michael continues to champion today:

Michael’s commitment to impact extends beyond education.
